The short answer

Reasonably programmed cardio usually does not cause muscle loss, especially when resistance training, protein, and adequate energy are maintained. Risk rises when endurance volume jumps, the calorie deficit is aggressive, leg training is chronically fatigued, or sleep and recovery are inadequate.

What matters

A recent meta-analysis found that concurrent training generally did not compromise hypertrophy or maximal strength compared with resistance training alone, although explosive strength may be slightly affected when both occur in one session.

Mode and dose matter. Walking or moderate cycling does not create the same recovery demand as frequent long-distance running.

During fat loss, resistance training preserves the muscle stimulus. If cardio volume becomes so high that lifting performance collapses, the program is out of balance.

Scale weight alone does not prove muscle loss. Review strength trends, measurements, photos, and the rate of weight loss together.
