The short answer

Delayed-onset muscle soreness is usually greater after novel exercises, sudden volume, or unfamiliar eccentric work. It decreases as the body adapts even when training remains effective. Muscle growth can occur without noticeable soreness, so multi-week performance and recoverable progression are better markers.

What matters

DOMS commonly appears 12–48 hours after exercise and may last several days. Its intensity varies by person and muscle and does not scale directly with growth.

The repeated-bout effect reduces perceived soreness and damage after repeated exposure. Less soreness does not mean the movement stopped working.

Severe soreness can temporarily reduce range and force, harming the next session. Deliberately chasing extreme soreness is not productive.

Radiating pain, sharp joint pain, major swelling, unusual weakness, or dark urine are not normal DOMS and require stopping and assessment.
