TDEE means total daily energy expenditure: all energy used across a day. It is closely related to maintenance calories, the average intake at which body weight tends to remain relatively stable over time.

Why TDEE changes

Daily expenditure varies with steps, sitting time, training, sleep, stress, illness, environment, and even food intake. During dieting, spontaneous movement may fall. With higher intake, movement and heat production may rise a little. TDEE is therefore better viewed as a moving range than a permanent number.

Practical example

If a person eats about 2,400 kcal daily and average weight remains stable for three weeks, 2,400 is a useful maintenance estimate. A modest reduction could start fat loss, while a small increase could support muscle gain. The result should then be reviewed again.

Can a smartwatch tell you TDEE?

Wearables are useful for observing activity and heart-rate trends, but their calorie number should not be treated as an exact allowance to “eat back.” Set a consistent intake target and use the watch as supporting information.

Can you increase TDEE?

More daily movement, steps, and appropriate exercise can increase expenditure. Added muscle may contribute modestly over time, but it is not a metabolic miracle. Excessive exercise used only to burn calories can increase fatigue, hunger, and recovery demands.

  • Choosing an activity factor that is too high

  • Adding exercise calories twice

  • Reacting to one day of scale weight

  • Ignoring reduced steps during a diet
