Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the minimum energy needed to maintain essential body functions under highly controlled resting conditions. It supports breathing, circulation, brain activity, organ function, temperature regulation, and cellular maintenance.
What BMR is not

BMR is not your total daily calorie expenditure. Getting out of bed, walking, digesting food, working, and training all require additional energy. TDEE includes those components. Treating BMR as maintenance calories can lead to unintentionally aggressive restriction.
What influences BMR?
Body size: a larger body generally requires more energy.
Fat-free mass: metabolically active tissues help explain differences between people.
Age: changes in physiology and body composition can reduce resting needs.
Sex and hormones: body composition and hormonal status influence expenditure.
Illness and environment: fever and some conditions can temporarily change energy use.
How is BMR estimated?
Laboratories can use indirect calorimetry. In everyday planning, equations such as Mifflin–St Jeor use age, height, weight, and sex to estimate BMR. The result is useful for a starting calculation, not a perfect measurement.

Does a low BMR mean a broken metabolism?
Not by itself. Smaller and lighter people usually need less energy. Weight loss also tends to reduce expenditure because there is less body mass to maintain and move, and spontaneous movement can fall. A plateau alone does not diagnose metabolic disease.
Should you eat below BMR?
BMR is not a magical forbidden line, but it is also not an appropriate universal calorie target. Total needs, activity, goals, and medical context matter. Very-low-calorie diets can compromise nutrient intake, training, sleep, and adherence and may require professional supervision.
Use BMR correctly
Treat BMR as one piece of a calorie estimate. Add activity, then refine the result with two to three weeks of real data. A BMR formula cannot diagnose a thyroid or metabolic disorder.
Bottom line
BMR is the body's baseline fuel requirement at rest, not the whole daily budget. It helps create an initial estimate; TDEE and real trends make that estimate practical.
