Is Training to Muscular Failure Good or Bad? is an important question, but there is no universal number. Training history, goals, schedule, recovery capacity, and exercise quality all matter.
The short answer
Training to failure is a tool, not a requirement. Most sets can end with one to three repetitions in reserve and still stimulate growth. Occasional failure on safer exercises can be useful, but constant failure adds substantial fatigue.
What matters most
Technical failure occurs when another repetition cannot be completed with acceptable form. Shortening range or using uncontrolled body movement lowers training quality.
Failure on heavy free-weight squats or presses without safety equipment carries more risk and fatigue. Machines and isolation work are usually safer choices.
With lighter loads, getting closer to failure matters more because very easy sets may not provide enough stimulus.
Taking early sets to failure can reduce the rest of the workout. Reserve it mainly for a final set or late-session exercise when appropriate.
